Junior
Mike Roesch with a 5 goal weekend |
October
31, 2004 - The Illini are glad that Junior Forward
Mike Roesch didn't miss the bus for the first road
and league games of the season against the Cyclones
of Iowa State. The Illini were looking to
use the weekend matches as a litmus test to see how
they were doing so far this season, and they were
happy to see the results, although they do realize
that there is still some work to do. On Friday night
both teams started out slow and had few a tough time
getting shots on goal, half way through the second
period the Illini were able to finally put a puck
where it counts as Marty Stratte put the Orange and
Blue on the board first. But the end of the second
period wasn't kind to the Illini as the Cyclones
scored twice to end the period. The third period
was the time for the Illini to turn it around, and
Mike Roesch started that trend with a power play
goal, assisted by Drew Heredia, just four minutes
in tying the game at two a piece. Nine minutes later,
Mike Roesch, with Justin Stock assisting this time,
would
put
in the
go ahead
goal for the Illini. To cap things off, Senior Brian
Coleman would put in an unassisted goal forty-one
seconds later, giving the Illini the 4-2 win.
On Saturday the Illini had a tougher time finding
a way to get the puck past ISU's goaltender, and
found themselves down 2-0 at the end of the second
period. It wasn't until seven and a half minutes
into the third period when on the power play, Mike
Roecsh, with the help of Marty Stratte and Jim Rogers,
finally got the Illini onto the board. Roesch and
Rogers would hook up once again, this time with Drew
Heredia helping out, and Mike would again tie things
up for the Illini. The trio would link up again minutes
later, this time with Jim Rogers putting the Illini
in front of Iowa State. As the period was winding
down, Roesch and Rogers hooked up once again on the
power play and Mike scored his hat trick goal, giving
the Illini another 4-2 win over Iowa State.
The Illini face off against the Cyclones once again
this coming weekend for two more games, this time
on the big pond. So come on out and pack the place
for another great set of games.
