Hoosiers hockey headed to Illini Ice
Indiana coming to take on the Illini
February 12, 2004 - This weekend brings another Big Ten schools hockey club to the Big Pond and hopefully some answers to what's been plaguing the Illini's play as of late. The team has been struggling in some areas and hopefully will get things to come together as the Hoosiers take to the ice and before heading to the CSCHL playoffs next weekend. The Illini can't look past the Indiana hockey team that always seems to play harder when facing the Illini. The Hoosiers have struggled some this season and sport a mediocre 14-11-3 record, but they are currently tied for third place in the Great Midwest Hockey League and are ranked 3rd in the Southeast conference for the ACHA's Division II teams. Indiana came away with a third place finish at the BigTen tournament earlier this season in Fishers, Indiana, in which the Illini came home with second place, both teams only losing to Penn State. In some ways like the Illini, Indiana has had a problem handling the same team for two consecutive nights, beating them handily one night and then falling to them the next. If both teams could figure this issue out, it would make the run for the championships a little easier. The Hoosiers will be bringing with them four players who are all averaging over a point per game, leading the way are Reed Schafer with 38 points, and David Ravensberg with 37 points and a plus/minus rating of +20. Indiana's Richard Young can also be an enforcer as well as put points on the board and usually spends as much time in the box as he does on the ice and is actually beating our very own Pat Olson's 101 penalty minutes by 20. The Hoosiers have been splitting their time fairly equally among their three netminders, and all are fairly equal with just under ninety percent save percentages and goals against averages over three, which the Illini will need to find a way to take advantage of. Both games are at 7:00 pm at the U of I ice arena this Friday and Saturday nights.
