Illini take the wind out of the Cyclones.

The Illini face off against the Cyclones

January 25, 2004 - With two wins this past weekend against Iowa State the Illini lock in second place in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League. Missing two veteran players from their line up, and outstanding play from two netminders, the Illini trounced the Cyclones on Friday evening, 10-1, and shut them out, 2-0, on Saturday. In Friday nights game, four Illini players netted two goals each, starting with Pat Olson who put the first of the Illini points on the board with an unassisted goal. Sophomore Mike Roesch, who has been coming on strong lately, scored his first of two goals near the thirteen minute mark in the first period as he took a pass from Tom Fullerton and cut through the Cyclone defense. With the Illini down two men because of penalties, the Cyclones put on the pressure and were able to capatalize on the 5 on 3 power play as the puck came from a crowd in front of the net and squirted past Illini goal tender Mike DeGeorge. That brought the Cyclones within one, but that was going to be that last thing getting past DeGeorge that night. In the second period the flood gates opened as the Illini scoring machine kept on finding its mark. Again Pat Olson was the one to start off the periods scoring and again he was unassisted scoring a power play goal. Half way through the period, the Illini put in two more goals just 29 seconds apart, the first was a Brian Coleman goal, assisted by Andy Lubesnick and Mike Roesch, and the second was from the stick of Justin Stock, with Pat Olson and Brett Duncan helping out. With five goals tallied against their netminder, the Cyclones tried to plug the leak with a fresh body in net. Just minutes later Freshman forward Marshall Chubirka made him feel welcome as put the sixth Illini goal on the board, the assist going to Mike Kincaid. In the third period and the Illini down a man, the Illini penalty killers put the pressure on the Cyclones and Mike Roesch found himself with the puck, and flew into the ISU zone alone and put the puck past their goaltender. Half way through the third period, Brian Coleman would net his second goal of the evening with Roesch on the assiting end. A minute and a half later, the Illini would put their ninth point on the board as Junior Clay Estabrooke put in his first of two goals for the night, assisting was Marshall Chubirka and Mike Kincaid. And with just a minute and a half left on the clock Chubirka and Kincaid team up again, this time with Brett Pachol also assisting to top off the Illini scoring at 10.
