Illini hit the road.
The Illini's first road oppenent.
October 16, 2003 - The Illini Hockey club will be taking to the road for the first time this season to compete in their first Central States Collegiate Hockey League games this weekend against one of their bitterest rivals, The Cyclones of Iowa State. The undefeated Illini will head into Ames, IA with a 4-0 record, but know they will have two tough games against the 5-4 Cyclones, especially on their ice in front of their fans. The Cyclones are on top of the CSCHL standings with 12 points, St. Louis and Ohio Universities come next tied with 8 points, followed then by Eastern Michigan who has 4 points. Since this is the Illini's first CSCHL games of the season they would like to start them out with wins and come away with some points. To help do this, they Illini are going to have to try and contain ISU's two Travises, Fast and Denzel, who ranked high in the Cyclone points department last year as well as Junior Scott Hagen who has been putting up the points so far this season. Another returning player that the Illini will have to keep an eye on is Brent Popadych who usually makes himself known, especially in big games as these two may be. On the other end of the ice Illini forwards will have to find a way to get around the Cyclone defense and put the puck past Freshman goaltender Ross Patrick who has already recorded one shutout so far this season. The Illini took all four games against the 'Clones last year, two of which were in Ames, and would surely love to do it again this year and quiet the homecoming crowd.
