The Wolverines are coming!
Michigan's Wolverines come to the big pond

September 24, 2003 - No it's not an X-Men invasion, nor is it pack of skunk bear migrating South from the tundra, it is however a group of navy and maize striped, stick wielding hockey players from Ann Arbor, Michigan. The University of Michigan's men's hockey club comes to Champaign-Urbana to open up their regular season against our very own Illini hockey club this weekend. The Wolverines skate in with an 18-11-1 record from the previous season, and bring with them two top goal scorers from last years team . Forward Ryan Anderson, who stands 6' 3" and weighs in at 185 pounds, lead the Wolerine club with 21 goals last season and was followed closely by Geoff Kobayashi, who knocked in 20 goals and helped out with 20 assists. Defensively, the club holds there ground, allowing an average of around 30 shots to find their way towards their net per game. Possibly one of the weaknesses of the blue and gold club may be in its goaltending corps which allowed an over average of four goals per game the prior year. The Illini are looking to take advantage of any weakness it can find though, and would love to start out their season with a 2-0 record, but the fairly new team will have to skate around some Michigan players to do it. The games take place on the University of Illinois Big Pond Friday, September 26th at 7 p.m. and then again on Saturday, September 27th at a special 1:45 p.m. start time. Tickets are still available for both games at the Ice Arena box office.
