Illini stop Eastern Michigan with 5-3 win
Illini face off against the Eagles
February 15th, 2003 - The Illini advance to the finals after beating the Eagles of Eastern Michigan and face the winners of the Ohio University and Iowa State University game. The Illini game turned out to be a busy one for the officials as there were 26 penalties called split evenly between the two teams. In the first period the Illini were able to take advantage of one of these penalties as Brett Ducan scored with just seconds left in the power play advantage, asists came from Tom Ennessy and Joel Superfine. With the Illini limited to just eight shots on goal, the period ended with the Illini up 1-0. Eastern opened up the second period with an early goal by Shaw tying the game at one a piece. Brett Pachol put the Illini back on top five minutes into the second with another power play goal, Luke Carlson assisting. Joel Superfine, playing one of his best games of the year, came alive and scored two second period goals, one of them being a power play goal, Matt Breit assisting on the first and Luke Carlson on the second, ending the period with the Illini up by three. The third period found the Illini with another power play goal, this one again from Brett Duncan as he chipped in a shot from Brian Tilden and Pat Olson. The Eagles found themselves on the power play twelve minutes into the period as one of the many questionable calls put Luke Carlson in the box, and the Eastern Michigan team took advantage it scoring as a bullet flew past Tim Danlow. With the period winding down, Eastern pulled their tender and sent on the extra man, and again took advantage of the situation scoring their third goal. The Illini were able to fend off any further attacks and ended the game with a 5-3 win sending Easter to the consolation game and propelling themselves into the Champion ships. Congratulations to Joel Superfine for his two goals and assist, Brett Duncan for his two goals, and to Luke Carlson adding two more assists to his growing assists record.
