February
14th, 2003 - Kent State fall to the fast paced
Illini in the first round of the CSCHL playoffs in Ames Iowa.
With lots of nasty rain, ice, and snow outside the Iowa State ice
arena, the Illini heated up the inside of the building with players
like Pat Olson and Jim Rogers leading the way. In the first period
of play the Illini found themselves down a man early, but the
penalty killers stayed off any shots as well as the rest of the
defense allowing the Golden Flashes only five shots on goal. The
Illini's Pat Olson was the first Illini to score with a power play
goal from Todd Chrustowski and Brett Duncan putting the puck past
KSU's Cameron Lee. The next Illini goal was something not seen by
too many people, with a delayed penalty called against the Illini,
KSU's goaltender headed to the bench and the extra attacker took to
the ice. An errant pass slipped back through center ice headed
towards the KSU net, but Kent State was able to stop the puck before
entering the empty net. The Flashes brought the puck back into the
Illini zone and again another wild pass headed back down the ice but
had too much speed on it for the Flashes to catch this one and it
sailed into the empty net. The goal was awarded to Brad Eaton for
being the last Illini player to touch the puck before the penalty.
Pat Olson opened up the second period much like he ended the first,
with another power play goal, this one from Jeff Condis and Brett
Duncan. Just sixteen seconds later the Jim Rogers show began as he
put the puck past the KSU tender, Assists going to Brian Coleman and
Brett Pachol. Jim Rogers wasn't done yet as he blew past the Flashes
and headed to the net alone and found Lee's weak spot scoring his
second goal of the period, assists from Justin Stock and Tim Danlow
who had to fend off only two shots in the second period. Still not
done, Jim Rogers with help from Brian Coleman and Kyle Mulvey,
scored his hat trick goal taking the Illini up by six. Still putting
the pressure on the Illini's Luke Carlson took part of the scoring
action and put in the fifth goal of the period, assists from Joel
Superfine and Kyle Zabrin. Brian Tilden capped off the orange and
blue scoring when he chipped in a rebound from a Pat Olson shot, one
of the 24 shots on goal for the period. The third period started out
with the Illini putting Joe Pedota in net and easing off on the
offensive play. The Illini allowed only five Flash pucks to find
their way towards the net and all were turned away by Pedota. The
Illini ended the game with the 8-0 score and will take on the
Eastern Michigan Eagles next. Congratulations to Jim Rogers
for the hat trick, Pat Olson for the two goals and one assist, the
Illini net minders for the shutout, and for the rest of the team
keeping the pressure on making Kent States most effective play icing
the puck.
