January
13th, 2003 - The Illini end their winter
break with two games against the Kent State Golden Flashes. Kent
State has been struggling most of the year but are still ranked 7th
in the CSCHL and 18th in the ACHA.
Friday nights game started out
slow with lots of errant passes and the Illini looking a little
rusty, but things did come back together after the start of the
second period. In the first period the lone goal was scored by
Illini's Scott Kohler, his 4th goal of the season, and the assist
going to Matt Breit. In the second period, some sixteen minutes
after the first Illini goal, Tom Ennessy took advantage of the power
play and fired a laser shot past KSU tender Billy Ferkol, Dan Lynch
and Pat Olson assisting. Later in the period, Brett Duncan caught
fire as he scored two more Illini goals within fifteen seconds of
each other giving the Illini a 4-0 lead in the contest. Pat Olson
assisted on both Duncan goals, while Brian Tilden assisted on the
first and Todd Chrustowski assisted on the second. Before the close
of the second period, Brian Tilden, with help from Joel Park,
slipped his 100th career goal past KSU's second goalie of the night
Cameron Lee. Starting off the third period the way he ended the
second, Brian Tilden again found the net with Brett Duncan and Joel
Superfine backing him up. That assist gave Joel his 100th
career assist with the Illini. Kyle Mulvey added to the third period
scoring, assisted by Brian Coleman, to give the Illini a 7-0 edge
over the Flashes. Not to be left out, the Illini's Luke Carlson
added the eight goal of the night with the assists going to Mike
Roesch and Joel Superfine. The game came to a close the same way it
started with Scott Kohler putting the puck in the net, this time
with the help of Kyle Zabrin and David Vargas. The 9-0 win left the
Illini with an overall record of 20-1-0. With this shutout, Tim
Danlow now holds the single season shutout recod with 5.
Saturdays match up started out
like it was going to be more of a game, but the stronger Illini
squad equaled its performance from the night before to once again
knock off the KSU skaters. With Coach Cassel in Italy for the World
University games, Assistant Coach Rick Kohler took the reigns of the
Illini did a pretty good job of it. Seven and a half minutes into
the first period, Illinois was the first team to strike as Brian
Tilden, Assisted by Ennessy, put the puck past KSU's Lee. Kent State
came back half way through the period and took advantage of an
Illini penalty as Derek Heinz evened things up at 1-1. Brett Duncan
put the Illini back on top though as he scored the the assistance of
Tilden and Ennessy. The second period was all Illini, as goals from
Kyle Mulvey, Brett Pachol, Steve Krates, and Brett Duncan all found
their mark in the back of the KSU net. Each goal was a single assist
coming from Jim Rogers, Tom Ennessy, Darin Trulock, and Pat Olson.
This was Brett Pachol's first goal of the season, and Darin Trulocks
first assist in his first game of the season. The Illini ended the
period with a 6-1 lead. In the third period Scott Hacker took over
the net minding duty from Tim Danlow and the wheels fell off of the
Kent State wagon and their frustration showed. The Illini's Steve
Krates scored his second goal of the evening just 12 seconds into
the period, giving him his third goal of the season, Jeff Condis and
Darin Trulock assisting. A minute later Pat Olson, teamed up with
Ennessy and Tilden, put another nail in the KSU coffin as he buried
the puck in the net. Jim Rogers topped off the Illini scoring at
nine with the help of Scott Hacker and Justin Stock. In the last six
minutes of play, KSU took 6 penalties, two of them being misconduct
penalties as the players frustrations clearly showed. The Illini
even put in an ALL defensive player line up that was something to
see. The Illini ended the night with a 9-1 win, and a 21-1 record.
