The
Illini celebrate a quick score |
November
25th, 2002 - It was the best of times, it
was the worst of times. That could probably sum up the fans feelings
this weekend as the Illini split the series with the Billikens of
St. Louis.
On Friday the Illini kept the
lamp behind the St. Louis goal lit most of the night with 3 goals in
the first period, 5 in the second, and 3 more in the third, sneaking
puck after puck past two different SLU goal tenders. In the first
period Pat Olson took advantage of the power play to put the Illini
on the board first, with assists from Luke Carlson and Joel
Superfine. Three minutes later Kyle Mulvey teamed up with Jim Rogers
and Brian Coleman to give the team a two goal advantage. Within
another three minutes Luke Carlson skated around the crowd in front
of the net and slipped one past PSU tender Schuessler, Assists going
to Superfine and Lynch. In the second period SLU's Jordan Janes came
out quickly and scored just 27 seconds in. The Illini answered back
when Kyle Zabrin slipped the puck past PSU's Schuessler with help
from Justin Stock and Tim Danlow. Minutes later Justin Stock took
advantage of the shaken net minder to get his first goal of the
season with Rogers and Coleman assisting. Todd Chrustowski also
found his way around Schuessler giving the Illini a 6-1 advantage
and a reason for the SLU coach to change goalies. Not giving SLU's
Spague much time to get comfortable between the pipes, the Illini's
Pat Olson put his second goal of the night in the net assisted by
Brian Tilden and Brett Duncan. Mike Roesch, with help from Carlson
and Superfine, also took advantage of the new tender, marking the
fifth Illini goal of the period. Within the closing minute of the
period, SLU's Malaney notched the Billikens second goal on the
night. In the third period, the Illini came out with Joe Pedota as
goal tender, earning him some playing time. Andy Lubesnick started
off the third period scoring drive, with assists from Kohler and
Zabrin. Kyle Mulvey earned his second goal of the with a laser
between Sprague and the pipe, and at the same time giving Carlson
and Coleman their forth assist on the night. SLU's Janes found his
way past the Illini's Pedota as he earned his second goal of the
game and the teams final point of the game. Scott Kohler put the
finishing touches on the Illini scoring and ended the game with the
11-3 Illini win.
On Saturday, less scoring
didn't mean less action. Good defensive play and good goaltending on
both sides of the ice kept the contest scoreless until almost half
way through the second period. The Illini's Jim Rogers finally was
able to take advantage of a SLU penalty and break the 0-0 tie, with
assists going to Brett Duncan and Kyle Mulvey. Now in the third
period, and most of the game gone, it looked like the Illini were
going to squeak out a win, but SLU's power play line had other
plans. With just over 3 minutes left in the game, SLU's Eric Herbst,
with help from Jordan Janes, took advantage of the Illini penalty
and tied the game sending it into overtime. The four on four
overtime period didn't last very long, just 48 seconds into the
match up, SLU's Tim Niedbalski, assisted by Herbst this time,
put the puck past the Illini's Tim Danlow, ending the game with a
2-1 SLU win.
