November
19th, 2002 - On Friday night the Illini came out
shooting, almost doubling the number of shots on
goal by EMU. The Illini put 40 shots up against EMU's Sam Horton
who allowed only 3 to get by, while on the other
end of the Ice,
Illinois tender Tim Danlow, kept out all 21 EMU shots to add another
shutout to his credits. I the first two minutes
of the game, Kyle
Mulvey, with an assist from Jim Rogers, scored what would become
the game winning goal of the match. With EMU's O'Reilly
in the box for a
high sticking penalty, Brian Coleman took advantage of the situation
and put in a power play goal with assists from Chrustowski
and
Duncan. The second period yielded no scoring from either side
keeping it an 2-0 Illini lead. In the third period, EMU's Ryan
Thompson found himself sitting in the box on three seperate
occasions, one of which the Illini's Pat Olson took advantage of,
scoring the third and final goal of the night.
On Saturday night it looked
like it was going to be more of the same, but the Eagles fought
their way back into the game keeping it exciting until the end. In
the first period Luke Carlson was the first to find the net, with an
assist from Mike Roesch. A little over a minute later, Jim Rogers
added to the Illini scoring with help from Coleman. EMU came back,
and forward Derek Wilson found a way around Tim Danlow bringing the
Eagles to within one. The Illini's Brian Coleman however took
advantage of an EMU slashing penalty and scored a power play goal
with Duncan and Chrustowski assisting. Just over a minute in the
second period, Todd Chrustowski, again with an EMU player in the
box, and again teamed up with Coleman and Duncan, provided the only
scoring for the period, and put the Illini up 4-1. In the third
period EMU took advantage of the power play, and brought the game
within two. Seven minutes into the period, EMU forward Justin Shaw
made it an even closer game putting in a third Eagle goal. With a
tie within their grasp, the Eagles pulled Horton from the net and
had the extra attacker on the ice. With 4 seconds left in the game,
the Illini's Brian Tilden was able to break free and put the puck
into the empty EMU goal, the assist going to Chrustowski, his second
of the evening..
