Brett
Duncan records a hat trick against the Beavers |
November
11th, 2002 - In two very anticipated
games, the Illini took on the Beavers from Minot state, and the fans
were not disappointed in the outcomes. In Friday nights match-up the
Beavers struck first seven minutes into the first period with Taras
Turko putting in an unassisted goal. Sixteen and a half minutes into
the game, the Illini found themselves trying to kill off a penalty
when they achieved not only that task, but at the same time Brett
Duncan and Jim Rogers were both able to put in unassisted
shorthanded goals, taking the Illini to a one goal lead at the end
of the first. The second period turned out not to be a very pretty
one for the Illini as Minot State provided the only scoring in the
period with three goals from Woolley, Cox, and Schollar. The period
ended with matching delay of game penalties to both the Illini and
the Beavers, and the Beavers up 4-2. The Illini hit the ice with
renewed vigor when the third period started, and Illini captain
Brian Tilden scored goals at 3:05 and at 6:45 knotting the game at
4-4. Two and a half minutes later, the Illini's Brett Duncan put the
team ahead by slipping the puck past the Beavers David Morton. Eight
minutes later, Duncan again found the net and earned his hat trick
goal, becoming the third Illini player with a hat trick this season.
The period ended with a late Minot surge and goal, but still leaving
them short as the Illini win, 6-5.
Saturday night proved to be
more of the Illini's night. Even though it was a scoreless first
period, it wasn't excitement free as each team had 17 shots on goal,
and one Illini shot rang through the air as it blasted off the post.
A few missed opporatunities and good goaltending kept it a 0-0 game.
The Illini came out in the second period skating strong, and five
minutes in, Illinois' Luke Carlson put the biscuit past Minot's
Bergstrand to put the Illini on the board. Pat Olson, who assisted
with Ennessy on the first goal, put in an Illini goal at 8:04 to
make it a two goal advantage. Six minutes later Brian Coleman of the
Illini, with an assist from Matt Breit, topped off the second period
scoring, making it an 3-0 Illini lead. In a defensive third period,
the teams only let 10 shots get towards their respective nets,
however one of them was guided into the gaping jaws of the empty net
by Brett Duncan as he slipped past the Beavers extra skater. With
Illini goaltender Tim Danlow doing an outstanding job between the
pipes, keeping out 45 Minot State shots for the three periods, the
Illini shut out the beavers with a 4-0 win. Tim now has three
shutout on the season.
