Illini still the Cyclones and sweep through Ames
Carlson and Tilden both register hat tricks
November 4th, 2002 - The Illini took  to the ice against the neighboring state rival Cyclones of Iowa State this past weekend in Ames. The matchup between the teams is usually a pretty good one, and the Illini were looking forward to the skirmish and putting their undefeated record on the line as well.

The Friday night shoot out started quickly as the Illini's Joel Superfine found the net less than two minutes into the match. Roughly two minutes after the first, Luke Carlson put one past the ISU netminder for the Illini's second goal of the period. At 12:56 in the first, ISU's Andrew Murdoch found a way to slip the puck past Illinois goalie Tim Danlow to make it a 2-1 game, and which later turned out to be the only ISU score of the night. The Second period started out much like the first, with the Illini scoring a goal with just a few minutes ticked off the clock, this one provided unassisted by Jim Rogers. Brian Tilden wrapped up the period with a goal, assisted by Pat Olson, bringing it to a 4-1 Illini lead.  During the third period the Illini were able to equal their scoring from both the first two periods, with goals from Brett Duncan, Brian Coleman, Brad Eaton, and a shorthander from Scott Kohler to cap off the game with an 8 - 1 Illini victory.

Saturday night matchup provided much of the same excitement, much to the dismay of the ISU crowd.  Just 38 seconds into the first period, the Illini's Kyle Mulvey started out what turned into a long night for ISU goaltenders, by putting the puck in the net. A pair of even strength goal from Brian Tilden, along with a pair of power play goals from Luke Carlson wrapped up the play for just the first period. The second period started out almost as quickly as Illinois Brett Duncan knocked one in to make it a 6-0 game. ISU's Tim O'Shea rebounded quickly from that goal and found a way to score just 41 seconds later, providing the nights only ISU goal. Luke Carlson, after having a very good first period, again found the net giving him the hat trick, but neither he or the Illini were close to being done for the evening. Brett Duncan wrapped up the scoring for the period by getting his second goal for the game. The final period went by quickly with a goal from Jim Rogers, as well as ones again from Carlson and Tilden, and ended the ISU nightmare with a score of Illini 11, Cyclones 1.

When all was said and done, and the games were in the books, the Illini's Luke Carlson ended up with 5 Goals (1 hat trick), and 3 assists, team captain Brian Tilden found himself with 4 Goals (1 hat trick) and 3 assists, and Brett Duncan with a 3 goal, 2 assist weekend. The Illini played well together as a team proving that they deserve the 12-0 record that they are touting.
