Warhawks fall to the Illini in weekend games
Goaltenders Danlow and Free stand clear
October 13th, 2002 - Wisconsin skated onto the Illini ice looking to start there season with a win against the 4-0 Illini. On Friday night Whitewater goalie, Vince Free, kept shutting the door on the Illini's attack and kept out 22 shots in the first period alone. Pat Olson of the Illini was finally able to slip one past Free in the second for that periods only goal. Jim Rogers found the net with help from Mike Roesch and Jeff Condis late in the third period to cap off the 2-0 Illini Victory.

Saturday night proved to be more of an action packed game than did Fridays. Jim Rogers started out where he left off on Friday night by putting in a goal three minutes into the first period.

In the second period the Illini exploded and put 5 more goals, 2 being just 5 seconds apart, past the shell shocked Free. Duncan, Lynch, Mulvey, Olson, and Kohler all ended up with a goal in the period.

What the third period lacked in scoring, it sure made up for in penalties. With just less than 8 minutes left in the third, and the Illini up 6-1, an altercation broke out that racked up a total of 24 penalties, resulting in a whopping 166 penalty minutes for both the Illinois and UWW teams. Goalies Danlow and Free watched the action from a safe distance at the opposite end of the ice while officials tried their best to separate the players and sort out infractions.

Once the play resumed the rest of the game was fairly quiet and the Illini held onto the 5 point lead ending the game with a 6-1 win over the Warhawks and a 6-0 start on the season.
